I am the Light of the World
John 1:1-5, 8:12
“I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of Life.” (John 8:12)
Let’s start with John chapter 1, Read verses one through five. What could you label verse 5 as?
Darkness cannot overcome light ~ light is triumphant over darkness
When is it most clear that something is light (or “putting out light”)? ________________________________
So, the darker the area around the light is, the brighter the light shines. What is the best way to get rid of darkness?________________
Read John 12:46 then John 12:36, then Ephesians 5:8. Believers don’t stay in darkness… not only leave the darkness, but come to the light… “children of light.” And they are to act as the Light’s children.
“When justice is divorced from morality, when rights of individuals are separated from right and wrong, the only definition you have left for justice is the right for every individual to do as he pleases. And the end of that road is anarchy and barbarism.” John Piper
What other time in history do you recall this way of life? ___________ “Doing what is right in your own eyes”
Reasons why we can be sure of Light’s Triumph:
1. the Light is the life of the Son of God
If the life of the Son of God IS the light that shines in the darkness, there are 4 things that Piper pointed out about this light. :
1) First, the light of life has energy & power because the Life of the Son has energy & power.
2) Second, the light of life has purpose & motion.
3) Third, the light of life grows & expands.
4) Fourth, the light of life begets offspring.
2. the Life is the Life of the Creator of all Things
How do we know that the powers of darkness are not greater than the power of His Light? He made it (created all things) no created thing is more powerful than its creator
Remember the demons in Luke 22? They knew the light will triumph.
3. This Light & Life is God
